Declined Application
There is no guarantee that an application for life insurance will be accepted.
It may be refused, for reasons including, but not limited to, adverse health or a dangerous occupation or hobby.
If an application is refused on health grounds, the insurance company will not divulge the reason to the applicant, but will, upon the applicant’s request, divulge the information to the applicant’s GP. The applicant may then contact their GP to discuss the reason.
If an insurance company declines an application, there are other insurers who will consider an application from a person who has been declined elsewhere, so it may still be possible to get cover.
When researching cover for someone who may perhaps have a particular medical condition, or an occupation or hobby with a degree of 'risk' involved, we discuss, in detail, the prospects for a successful application with life insurance underwriters before making a recommendation to our client.
One way of looking at the requirement for a medical is to view it as a “free check up”, although that, of course, should not be the reason to apply for cover!
We have experience of applicants who were refused cover due to the discovery of life-threatening ailments, but due to the discovery, were able to be placed on the appropriate medical therapy, and thus greatly reduce or virtually remove the possibility of imminent death or severe illness that unknowingly, previously existed.
