Smoking or Non-smoking?
All types of life insurance, critical illness and income protection policies usually have higher premiums, sometimes substantially higher, for those who smoke.
A smoker
Usually defined as a person who has used a 'tobacco product' within the last 12 months. 'Tobacco products' include any tobacco-related products, such as nicotine patches; not just cigars, pipes and cigarettes.
If you have used any tobacco product within the 12 months prior to making an application you must state that you are a 'smoker' or you will likely invalidate your policy. (If the company to which you are applying has a longer 'no tobacco' period, please ensure you answer the question correctly.)
Non-smoker
Usually defined as a person who has not used any 'tobacco product' within the last 12 months.
As above, a 'tobacco product' would include any tobacco-related products, such as nicotine patches, not just cigars, pipes and cigarettes.
Certain insurers offer non-smoker rates to people who use tobacco products (e.g. a pipe or cigars) providing they never smoke cigarettes.
